‘Layston School is an Outstanding School’
(Ofsted, June 2009)
Layston School is in a beautiful rural situation on the outskirts of, and overlooking, Buntingford. The school is spacious and well resourced with a large school field and creative play areas. We have recently enhanced our grounds by the creation of a wild area, willow tunnel, allotment and Forest School.
Our school is a co-educational, voluntary controlled, Church of England school. This Church connection and Christian ethos are central to all we do. Our daily act of worship is important to the life of the school. In sharing and understanding God’s love, and the Christian principles which flow from it, we learn to respect that which is unique and precious about each one of us.
Our age range is 4 to 9 years. Each year, we have a maximum intake of 30, so children are always taught in single age classes. Admission arrangements are managed by Herts County Council.
We are part of a three tier system, which comprises five first schools. These First Schools feed into two Middle Schools, which are Edwinstree School in Buntingford and Ralph Sadleir School in Puckeridge. These in turn normally send children to Freman College Upper School, at the age of 13 years.

“The Christian vision is deeply embedded and underpins every aspect of the daily lives of the whole school community.
Relationships between adults and pupils are exceptionally positive. There is a very strong culture of welcome and inclusion.
Everyone feels cherished and all pupils and adults flourish. The whole school community feels valued and supported and all groups are able to contribute to discussions of faith knowing their opinions will be treated seriously and with respect. The school is very effective in ensuring good outcomes for vulnerable pupils.”
